Shopping With My Teen

My 13 year-old, of 15 days, wanted to shop for a pair of jeans, and t-shirt last weekend. It sounds like a fun time, shopping with my daughter, right?

NO WAY!!!

Here's the problem... she's short, 4 feet, 10 inches, weighs 98 lbs, and has a booty. She no longer fits into the little girl clothes, but not quite big enough for Juniors. If we happen to find clothes in Juniors, they're either way to grown up, or we have do alterations. The pants have to be hemmed almost a foot, and taken up in the waist.

I am not proficient at tailoring clothes. Lets be real, I suck at hemming!

When trying to find clothes, ie... skinny jeans, slacks, dresses, skirts... it ain't easy. Did I mention, she doesn't like ANY THING I like. No matter what I pick up, she frowns. Her sister can come back, pick up THE.SAME.SHIRT, say it's cute, and she's in love with it. What the what?!

Our shopping experience always ends in her getting frustrated, and pouting, me getting frustrated, and fussing! I'd rather have my teeth pulled than go shopping with her.

I try real hard to remember, my days of teen shopping. As a senior in high school, I weighed 98 lbs. thin as a rail, and light as a feather. NOTHING I wanted to wear fit. Shopping with my mother ended in me crying, and she wanting to pull her hair out of my head!

Finally, after going from store, to store, to about four other stores... we found a pair of skinny jeans, that with a belt, were okay. And thank God for Rue 21. They had what seemed like millions of printed T's. There was no major melt down, and we all survived.

The real test is on it's way. We're going Easter shopping soon. Get the pliers, and gas ready. I want it to be pain free!!!

Hey La'Tonya,

I remember shopping with my mom at that age...it was never fun. Our styles are completely different and I kid with her now that Nurse Friend is really her daughter because those two loves themselves some patterns. I am more of a solid person myself, the biggest pattern you'll get out of me is a stripe, and I'm not sure that even qualifies.

I will keep my finger crossed for you on Easter...that seems like an even more daunting task than jeans and a t-shirt.

I can't even imagine how tough it must be for girls these days to pick out stuff they like and that fits well, etc. It seems like there is just so much pressure to look a certain way, etc. I hope that if I have a little girl, things calm down a bit!

Good luck with the Easter search!

I think the last time I went shopping with my mom we bought Garanimals. Anyone remember those?

Suffice it to say it was never pretty.

Somewhere along the way, my mom got the truly brilliant idea to just give me some cash and let me have at it. In her mind, I was the one who had to wear it, so why should she suffer by enduring the shopping? It worked well, and taught me the value of a fashion dollar!

Faith - You'll need to do more than cross your fingers for me. I need prayer! Prints, huh?!

The Mommyologist - My son who's 17 has always been easy to please! Right now, he wants jean, not skinny, and shirts that will never resemble metrosexual. Plaids with certain colors, and he's good. That's it!

My girls, are a different ball game all together! Everyone has her own style!

Deidra - Garanimals, LOL. Do you know what my 13 year old would come back with if we just gave her the money? Skinny jeans, hightop gym shoes, and printed t's with inappropriate sayings.

I also hate shopping with my kids. So far I've been able to just bring stuff home (they're 10, 7 and 4) but my 10-year-old is starting to get into picking her own stuff which is not cool and my 7-year-old's jeans always, always, *ALWAYS* need to be hemmed. Grrr.

You brought back memories of shopping with my daughter way back when. She LOVED to shop, but we always liked different things (still do!) That is one thing I don't miss with my 13 year old son. He HATES shopping. First off he doesn't like anything new (how crazy is that?!) So I just go out without him and get him some Levi's and jeans and he's happy.
