Catching up

Lately I've been missing in action! I've been so busy, that I've had no time to blog, but it has been on my mind! So let's play catch up.

My 16 year old plays AAU basketball, and we've been burning up the highway going to practice and games. Two weeks ago we traveled to Frisco, TX, to the Heart of Texas Showcase. I had never seen anything like it in my life! The facility at Field House USA was amazing! There were hundreds of 10th, and 11th girls. I've never seen that many tall girls, with tall parents in one place... EVER. I felt so very short!

Recently my girls saw shirt that sums up my role as a mom of athletes...

I'm a Gatorade getting, uniform washing, glove finding softball mom.

It's the end of the semester, and I'm totally overwhelmed! Although I'm always excited about the end of the year, it stresses me out! Yesterday, I had to get seniors work graded, scores averaged, and grades turned in, in preparation for graduation. Next week is finals for everyone else, and I have to do it all over again. Pray for me!

The end of the school year for my children is always busy. There are banquets, concerts, and trips, along with cheer leading tryouts, and the softball state tournament. And of course most of these things cost money! The beginning, and the end of school drains my pocket. But the life of a teenager is complicated, and can be some of the best years of their lives.

I hope my kids are taking note of all the opportunities they have been afforded. It's going to be my mission as a grandmother, to make sure they do the same for their children!

First Day of School 2010

Today, I'm trying my version of live blogging the first day of school. I will update through out the day as developments occur. For you, that means come back again, and again! I will also Tweet with the hastag #1stdayoschool

6:32 a.m.

Yesterday in the realization, I had less than 24 hours before the first day of school, I became sick. Just like last year, I am NOT ready for summer to be over. It just started! One more month, that's all I need one more month!

The following were my Tweets of desperation:

Can we extend summer break one month? #notreadyforthefirstday

Is it too late to petition a summer break extension? Who should I call, text, Facebook or Tweet? The Governor perhaps for a #stayofsummer.

911 - IT'S AN EMERGENCY!!! I'M NOT READY FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. CAN WE DO THIS IN A FEW WEEKS. #notready

The Governor has not called about my #stayofsummerbreak. It's drawing near the 11th hour.

The Governor never did call about my stay of summer. The first day of school is happening TODAY, without my blessing. The kids are up singing, happy, and getting ready. While, I'm blogging, frustrated, and sad.

8:38 a.m.

I took the usual "first day of school" pictures of each child. The middle girls, caught the bus, my son drove off into his senior year, and I drove Baby girl, who will be riding the bus from now on, to her new school. Walking away from my baby at a brand new school, I teared up. Not because I was happy. But I no longer have babies that need me. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they're older, but every now and then, I feel a little longing for the babies they once were.

@IamTarynClarke says I'm having back to school blues.

Years ago, when my best friend and I still lived in the same city, we'd meet and have a Coca-Cola to celebrate the first day, once all the kids were in school. After she moved away, we continued our tradition by having our Coke and conversation over the phone.

Her baby is a few months shy of 21, and we haven't observed our ritual in a while. Today, I'm having my Coke, while sharing with you. Have a great day.

See you after school.

After school - Recap of the Day

Baby girl was first to make it home. She walked in the back door, and all I remember hearing is, "Mama... blah, blah, blah, blah, blah... I got lost... blah, blah, blah, blah, blah... I ate lunch at the wrong time... blah, blah, blah, blah, blah... and then something about, I almost missed the bus.

It's safe to say she had a great day.

Nearly an hour, and a half after school was over, my middle daughters burst through the door. It was raining cats and dogs. They ran home from the bus stop (just past three other houses), and were soaking wet.

It was all old friends, new kids, and "I really like that teacher." There was laughter, complaining about the schedules, and more laughter. Having two children very close in age, and attending the same school is a great thing. They always have each other.

Finally my son made it home after football practice. He's a senior, leading and starting running back... Big Man On Campus! He volunteered NO information. I had to almost had to pull information out of him! I finally learned he had a good day, and looking forward to great grades.

I'm praying the school year goes as smooth as the first day of school.

Summer's Coming To An End

Wednesday, is the first day of school. The closer it gets, the more I'm NOT so excited! When that bell rings, it will be official. Summer break is a wrap. Done. Finished!

When my oldest was in elementary school, my friend and I would meet for a Coke, after the First Day of School Ritual. Even after she moved away, we celebrated via telephone. Once her children finished school, I continued by adding lunch at my favorite Chinese restaurant, and watching The Color Purple.

As much as I'd love to get my celebration on, I'm just not ready. I want the lazy days of summer to continue for a little while longer. Starting August 19, we (that includes me), will start the whole "school routine." That means rolling at 5:30 a.m, fussing and threatening kids to get ready, as well as, yelling out the time, every 15 minutes. Occasionally, it includes pushing the two bus riders out the door with shoes, and breakfast in hand. It can get UGLY!

I've enjoyed waking up at 7 a.m. getting ready for work, and dropping one or two off at practice, not so early. Not being in a hurry and not fussing feels great.

All the other parents will be smiling and excited about their children being out of the house, no longer running up electricity bills, and eating up all the food. I'll be the grumpy Mom in the corner, wearing a frown, and lip dragging the ground!

The count down is on. The first break is Labor Day, 12 days after the first day of school. The second is 31 days after that!

School's OUT!!!

The unofficial start of summer is not Memorial Day, (heard that on TV), it’s actually the last day of school. Yahoo, school is out! (SCREAMING)

Friday, the bell rang the very last time of the school year, for most of the children in my neck of the woods. I’m sure they are excited to be free from school for the next two and a half months.

So long hall passes, recess, cafeteria ladies and teachers. School day pictures, orchestra concerts, parent teacher conferences, detention and the like.

Not only are the kids and teachers taking a break, parents are as well. No more waking up at 5:30am to get (drag) the bus riders in our house out of the bed. Running to school, with left behind lunch money, instruments, books, and home work is on hold.

I’m excited right now, knowing after the first two weeks of summer break, my lovely children will become, The Monsters. They will eat everything, and look for more like scavengers. After receiving the first water and electricity bill of the summer, and viewing the increase by 20%, I’ll be ready for school to start. Shoot, I’ll be counting down the days.

I can hear my mother’s voice, “Pay back is hell.” Yes it is, Mama. Yes it is.

I’ve made a list of things “to do” and places “to go” on my “No work Friday’s.” So far 12 things have made The List. We have 10 or 11 weeks of summer ahead of us. While we (I) can, we’re going to enjoy the summer.

I'm no longer smarter than my kids

My youngest children are 12, 11, and nine years old, and in the seventh, sixth and fourth grades. It was last year I realized I could no longer help the 12 year old with her math homework. All three of them are learning Geometry and Algebra on their grade levels. I think I’m a smart person, an intellectual even. I have to admit, this NEW math has lost me! I didn’t take Algebra I until the eighth grade, and Algebra II in the ninth. I did fairly well in both. At that time, I was 13 and 14 years old. That’s been what… a century ago. Not actually, but it has been a little more than quarter of a century.

Geometry and Trigonometry both came along in the 10th grade. I thought I was a math wiz after doing so well in Algebra. That first semester was a rude awakening! I realized math and I were not friends. Shoot, we weren’t even on speaking terms! I dropped out of both, and changed my mind about ever seeking a career with math requirements. It just wasn’t happening!

Now, my kids are asking questions, and needing help with math. For a while, I would look it over, and if it was past basic Algebra, pretended I knew what I was doing. I’d then flip a few pages, scratch my head, and scribble a little bit on their paper. Finally, I’d say, “This isn’t how we did it when I was in school. Things have changed. Ask your dad, or your sister.”

I’d pass the buck to my husband, or my oldest daughter. He’s much more literate with it comes to math, and she’s now a college sophomore, majoring in Biology. Now, I’m so past keeping up appearances. These days when they ask for help with math, and it’s past basic Algebra, and Geometrical shapes, in particular triangles, I immediately respond, “Call your sister.”

A couple of weeks ago, the 12 year old had a problem I couldn’t help her with, I directed her to her sister. They talked on the phone for about 15 minutes. The problem was solved, and I never broke a sweet, or popped a blood vessel. Seriously, as technology advances, and the process of math becomes NEW to the ninth power, it’s time parents take a refresher course, and catch up to our kids.

My nine year old said, a couple of months ago, “We’re smarter than you were at our age. We have computers and so much more technology.”

Of course I had a rebuttal. Although they have the latest advances in technology, and get the answers to anything at almost the speed of light, those advances make them lazy. Youth of today, (adults too), don’t have to think for themselves. Formulas and equations no longer have to be studied and learned. That’s what hi-tech calculators are for.

Phone numbers are no longer committed to memory. They’re all stored in cell phones that are more than just phones. AT&T has a list of Smart Phones to include the Black Jack, BlackBerry, I-Phone, and the Palm-Centro. They tell time in all parts of the world, function as personal computers, and act as MP3 players. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Now that’s technology for you.

I remember having to do a report in sixth grade on Africa. It took a few weeks to finish. There were certain things that needed to be included in the report. When our set of Encyclopedia Britannica didn’t have everything I needed, I had to find another family with a set of encyclopedias. Eventually my research led me to the public library to look through periodicals.

Recently, one of my daughters had a report due for Science. She went to the Internet, printed all the research she needed, including maps and pictures, all within 30 minutes. She was then ready to get started on a report. My sixth grade report couldn’t compare. Yes, at their age they have greater access to the latest information.

I’ve decided to reacquaint myself with math, and learn the latest methods. Part of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s Philosophy says, “The end of education is to know God, and all of his laws…”
In order to keep up with my kids in math and technology, I have to do one of two things. Stay one step ahead, or learn right along side them. I’d better hurry, or I’ll have some serious catching up to do!
