What's A Foodie?

For some time now, I've wanted to know... What is a Foodie?!

I asked the question on Twitter, several times, and got no response! My journalistic instincts went to work, and I started to research.

I read websites, and blogs of those who are "foodies." I thought I was starting to understand. But I was just sure exactly what makes one a "foodie."

Then, I set out to find definitions, and meanings. I thought surely that was the ticket! The following are a few, of what I came up with:

Foodies.com says... On the curriculum vitae of a foodie, "eating" is listed as a hobby. The foodie lives to eat. A true foodie clings to all things culinary.

Wordnetweb  A person devoted to refined sensuous enjoyment, especially food and drink.

Wiktionary: A person with special interest or knowledge of food, a gourmet.

Wikipedia: An informal term for a particular class of aficionado of food and drink.

I thought, I could kind of be a foodie, until reading those definitions. I'm way off the mark!

I don't consider "eating," a hobby. Although Mr. Husband may say different. I don't have a refined "sensuous." I just know what taste good to me. My knowledge of food is limited, and I certainly don't consider myself a gourmet. I don't THINK I qualify as an aficionado of anything. Lastly, I don't drink! Unless you count Coke.

With further research, I tried to determine if I have what takes to one day be a foodie. That research led me here:

Aficionado: a person likes, knows about, and appreciates a fervently pursued interest or activity.

Gourmet: A connoisseur of food and drink.

Connoisseur: One who understands the details, technique, or principles of an art and is competent to act as a critical judge.

I like food very much, and I'm pursuing more of an interest in foods I'm not used to cooking, or eating. My understanding is limited, although I do have a few techniques of my own. Finally, I realized I could be a "foodie in training."

Foodie in training is a fair. That's better than foodie wannabe!

I think a foodie is someone who has a passion for food, loves to cook, to try new recipes, reads blogs, books and magazines about food.
You know how I know it? my mum is one!

I'm probably a bit of both - a foodie in training and a foodie wannabe. I would hate to become a food snob (but it's ok to be a coffee snob, lol), but I enjoy exploring flavours, creativity with food, aesthetics, and a good hearty meal. I think that qualifies for something.

Funny, in my mind I've always equated Foodie with Tourist. I have no idea why that is, but it is.

Now that I've seen it described as eating as a hobby I am extremely afraid of becoming a Foodie. I don't even want to be labeled a Foodie.

Mmmm... good question! I've heard that term many times too and really wasn't sure of the def....

I've decided, I'm a Foodie in training too!

Hey La'Tonya,

You go on with your Foodie in Training self. Personally I think you can call yourself a foodie if you want with none of that pretense of gourmet and that crap. Of course my little brother calls himself a foodie and I think it sticks for him because one of his hobbies is eating. He also likes to tell me what spices I put in things, he can be kind of annoying like that.
