My Kids Are Ashamed of Me!

I've learned a lot sitting at the table with my kids. You would be surprised what they will tell while eating!

From out of nowhere, 14 year-old daughter started a conversation about age, particularly my age vs. the age of her friend's moms. Most of them are in their early to mid 30s.

"And when they tell their mother's age, I don't say anything," 14-year-old daughter said. Then 13-year-old daughter, and Baby girl chimed in. "Yeah, you're older than my friend's moms too."

Because I'm older, JUST 42, they're ashamed. With a soft voice, and a little attitude I explained, I didn't start having children at 15. Somehow, they forgot, we have 5 children. I didn't have them all at the same time, like puppies. Once upon a time, I too was a young mother. Infact, it wasn't THAT long ago.

When taking them to elementary school, I was a young mother. Or did they forget? They're now moving into middle school, and Jr. High. My son will be a Senior in High School, and our oldest daughter a Senior in college. I'm not a grandmother!

Even though, their friend's moms are younger in age, I still LOOK younger than most of them.

Are your kids ashamed of you?

Aren't all kids ashamed (embarrassed) of their parents?? The other kids are just as ashamed of their parents.

I have noticed the same thing. I used to be the young parent, and now I am getting to be the older parent!

Ha ha! My son is too young to be ashamed/embarrassed yet, but I'm sure it'll happen. I think it's natural and inevitable.

I remember once when I was in elementary school and I didn't want my parents to come to parent/teacher night because they were the only ones still married! *lol* Whoa!! It was a quick moment that passed, but looking back it makes me laugh. Kids are silly!

Like you said, you didn't have them at 15 and you are not a Grandmother. Don't forget to tell them how good you look for your age too.

Hey LaTonya,

Now I don't have any kids but this reminds me of a conversation I was having the other day with Model Friend. She sent me a random text the other day that everyone is having kids before her. To which I responded that she needed to jump on that because she didn't want to show up at the PTA meeting looking like someone's grannie.

Side note I don't think you look a day past 33 1/2! Tell those kiddies that you can take on any of those "young" moms.
