Spring Break Staycation

When school started in August, I started counting down to Spring Break. It's so close I.can.smell.it. It's literally, days away!

I had plans of running off to a far away land, pampering myself, and letting the kids run wild and free. That was more of a dream than a plan. But anywho, there has been a change. We're having a staycation. No, not one where we just hang around the house, and do things at home. A staycation in that, we're not going out of state. We are so going to leave the house and 'do thangs, fun thangs!'

I have a list of things to do within 100 miles, that include:

Visit the Heifer International Ranch.
It's a working example of the sustainable agriculture Heifer supports around the world. It has camels, and all types of animals from various world cultures.

Visit the 'World of Pharaohs,' Egyptian exhibit.
Egyptian artifacts, and more than 200 objects including mummies.

Tour the Little Rock Central High Museum.
I'm a graduate, and have NEVER been to the museum. I think it would be enlightening.

Go fishing.
There's a State Park I've wanted to visit for a while. I don't care for fishing, but my kids enjoy it.

Fly kites.
March is one of the most windy months. My younger girls have never flown kites, and I think they'd enjoy catching a little air.

Do Lunch.
I thought we'd lunch a couple of places we've never eaten before.

While mapping out what day we'd do what, I was so excited, and even a little giddy. I shared my plans with 14 year-old middle daughter, she didn't give me the reaction I was looking for.

"Mama, we want to do something fun," she said.

And all of that isn't fun?! Okay, Heifer, and the Egyptian exhibit is a little educational, but it's fun too!

Now I'm going back to the drawing board. What are you doing with your kids for Spring break?

We are in the middle of our break, and thank goodness Colorado weather has been kind to us. We have spent hours outside playing kickball, took a ride to a state park never visited before, went out to lunch, painted artwork for bedrooms and with any luck I will get to making recycled paper with them. But tops on the kids list has been the kickball games in the middle of the street.

What a great idea! One reason behind some of my 101 in 1001 goals was to do just what you're doing: exploring and appreciating things to do around me. I figure that tourist attractions and special exhibits aren't just for out-of-towners, and feel embarrassed when I have visitors who have seen more of my local area than I have! Enjoy your staycation! :-)

You know what? We're getting the heck out of the house also. Our break begins in another week or so and you've given me a few ideas of how to make it fun for everyone - including me (smile).

Peeping my head out of lurkerviller:

I dont' get a Springs Break but I did manage to take 2 days and I believe we are going to visit the Heifer Ranch, too. Judging by the reaction you got, I don't think I am going to let the kids know the plans.

My husband and I try do so something like this each month.

We take turns finding something local and planning a day out.

Although his last two picks had us out in the desert in a 4WD on almost non-existent roads.

I may have to curtail his choices until I can stand upright again!

Unfortunately we are staying home, but I like the idea of doing local activities. We may do that to maintain my sanity!
