This For That

A few days ago, I reached under the sink for dish washing liquid, and it was almost gone. Not wanting to run to Wal-Mart and buy any, I ran a little water in the bottle to stretch it just a little bit further. I started laughing.

I remembered, as a kid when dish washing liquid ran out we used washing powder. It wasn't often, but yes we have used Tide to wash dishes. Washing powder makes the dishwater really sudsy, and dishes very slick. I remember breaking a glass or two as well.

Then I really got to thinking. What else have I used instead of, when things ran out...

Dishing washing liquid instead of bubble bath. Joy, with its lemony fresh scent, made THE BEST bubbles.

Mayonnaise instead of an egg. Watching a cooking show, it suggested this substitution if you find yourself without. Let me tell you... That didn't work so well for that cornbread. Can you say rock bread?!

It's your turn. What have you used as a kid, or an adult instead of, when you found yourself without?

OMG we so totally put water in the dishwashing liquid bottle when it was out. I still do. And we used Ivory for bubble bath. Also used Powdered Milk when stuff ran out. As a kid, you didn't see anything wrong with it. I can't think of anything else off hand.

I confess that I've substituted shampoo for both bubble bath and shaving cream. Hey - it worked for me. :)

I use hair conditioner instead of shaving cream (much cheaper and less drying), but that's an "every day" substitution rather than an "I've run out, what do I do?" change. I'll use a generous dose of lemon juice if I run out of lemon essence when baking, but it never turns out quite the same. I have also been known to scrub stubborn oven trays with dishwasher powder when oven cleaner hasn't been available. Oh my!

We used baking soda when we ran out of toothpaste and now they're putting baking soda in the toothpaste that I buy at the store!

Milk and vinegar instead of buttermilk. Kleenex when I run out of TP. and there's no such thing as running out of Ketchup when you have packs from Micky D's!
